Facebook Resteverwertung: Star Trek & Stuff

Sorry für die Funkstille, aber ich arbeite gerade massiv das Chaos in meinem Leben ab. Auch der glamouröseste Blogger muss seine Steuern machen, die Festplatten aufräumen und im Keller Ordnung schaffen, wenn ein neues Jahr droht. Außerdem planen die LvA und ich gerade eine USA-Reise mit folgenden Eckdaten: 16 Tage, 11 Hotels, 3 Staaten und 2900 Kilometer. Boldly going everywhere…

Letztes Mal hatte ich ja meine Kurz-Kritiken zu “The Orville” dem Facebook entrissen. Da ist es nur gerecht, wenn ich selbiges auch mit den Einträgen zu “Star Trek Discovery” mache. Die Reviews zum Pilotfilm und zu der ersten regulären Folge findet ihr immer noch hier und hier.

“Star Trek Discovery: The Butcher’s Knife Cares Not for the Lamb’s Cry” deepens the inevitable conflict between the mission of the Discovery the moral imperative of Michael Burnham. Even thought I dislike the core concept of the “navigator” to illustrate that conflict, it looks like they at least try to find a balance between the horizontal and the vertical storytelling elements. There’s hope. The Klingons are still a nuisance, though.

Sooo, a new “Star Trek Discovery” episode. Badly structured, filled with B plots elevated to A plot status, shaky characterizations and a complete waste of Harry Mudd, who is barely introduced. Michael Burnham is relegated to a minor role this time – have the writers already run out of ideas for her? On the plus side – three really good, empathic scenes in the epilogue that hint at larger, more interesting developments. And thank God they got rid of the ugliest plot idea in Trek history after a mere two episodes. While the production value is still vastly superior, this weeks episode of “The Orville” was stronger. Much stronger.

Okay, “Star Trek Discovery: Lethe”: Again, the plot NOT featuring Michael Burnham was the more interesting one. The show struggles to integrate her past into the proceedings, with Michael Frain exhibiting very limited charisma as Sarek. And people actually do their morning jog in the corridors of the ship instead of on treadmills or on the holodeck?! Seriously??? Jason Isaac’s Captain Lorca continues to be the most fascinating character by far – and let’s face it, in a just world, Isaac would be James Bond by now. On the whole “Discovery” still lacks a mission both on the fiction and the non-fiction level. Instead of going somewhere (boldy, even?), it just gets muddled. The best part this week? The trailer for next week.

New week, new “Star Trek Discovery”. “Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad” was certainly the most trek-ish episode to date and its story of multiple time loops was interesting (while not exactly fresh), but it was bogged down by too much technology pulled out of thin air. The science of the show follows the dramatic requirements too much. On the other hand, it was nice to see Burnham finally loosen up a bit.

I thought this week would be an easy win for “Star Trek Discovery”, since “The Orville” aired its worst episode yet. But STD managed to outbore its competition with a confusing, slapdash, unexciting episode that calls to mind some of the worst TNG and VOY installments. A VERY weak setup for a finale that promises the climax to a conflict we have never really seen or understood. And no, I still don’t give a shit about the Klingon shenanigans…

Okay, the mid-season finale of “Star Trek: Discovery” was just as confusing, random, badly scripted and sloppily paced, unexciting and plain misguided as the episodes preceding it. Those hoping for a final turnaround were seriously disappointed. It continues to look gorgeous, but lacks a coherent overall storyline, a sense of scope and focused character development. Never has a Trek show (or any show, really) shown so many signs of studio/network meddling and rotating showrunner syndrome.

Und damit sind wir auch schon bei der zweiten Hälfte der ersten Staffel, die vor ein paar Tagen gestartet ist.

“Star Trek Discovery” has returned with one of its most intense and dramatic episodes yet – introducing us to a totally new universe after failing to establish the original universe in the preceding nine episodes. Effectively rebooting the series with a device that usually works best when we are VERY familiar with the ship and the crew (and we aren’t here), Discovery tries to refocus right into a Trek cliché that it just isn’t ready for. Burnham continues to be a lesser character in her own show, Lorca is giving mixed signals (didn’t we establish that he was a psychopath?!), and the big mystery still continues to puzzle exactly no one. Yes, it’s better than the last batch of episodes and it infuses the Trek universe with some much needed gray areas (much like the current Star Wars movies has done), but it still feels sloppy and half baked.

Die Qualität der Motel One-Kette lässt sich daran ermessen, dass ich genau zwei Verbesserungsvorschläge hätte:
1) Die Fernseher im Zimmer nicht immer beim Betreten anschalten (egal, ob Aquarium oder Kaminfeuer)
2) Die “Nicht stören”-Schilder so gestalten, dass sie nicht immer runterfallen, wenn man die Tür öffnet

I think the film has only one misstep – when we find out that this had been brewing in him for a long time, that his “snapping” was not a crack in the facade, but actually the result of a long term decent into madness. It diminishes the character and takes away the idea that this could happen to anyone, anywhere, anytime.

The first horror movie I ever saw on VHS. I must’ve been around 14, which would date this somewhere around 1982. We didn’t have a VCR, but I was babysitting a 3 year old girl and her parents allowed me to raid their video cabinet after I had put her to bed. After this, I watched “Mausoleum” – to say I was impressed by Bobbie Bresee’s boobies would be an understatement.
